Strings should be sized according to your banjo. Many low end banjos won’t cope with the tension of med or heavy gauged strings. If you banjo is sturdy enough (google “strings for x banjo) For example i just google strings for a deering goodtime and here is what i got..”WHAT KIND OF STRINGS CAME ON MY DEERING/GOODTIME BANJO? The most common gauge of strings used on any Deering/Goodtime/Vega banjo is our private label factory light gauge strings made for us by Dunlop here in California. The gauges are 10,11,13,21w,10.”

This would be your optimal choice.Basically if it is light banjo…use light strings

Just play more often to get tougher callouses.(and to get better on the banjo) Have fun
