One String that seems louder than others

I have notice lately that the high D string rings significantly louder and longer than the other strings, even when I try to lighten the picking stroke on the string. It dominates the sound unless I hardly hit the string at all.
Should I change that string out for a lighter gage string or is there some kind of adjustment I can make to the bridge or other part of the banjo.
